The Only Person You Should Be Better Than Is Who You Were Yesterday

Here’s something that took me longer than I’d like to admit to actually believe:

The only person worth comparing yourself to is who you were yesterday.

That’s it. Everyone else is irrelevant.

The 1% That Doesn’t Feel Like Anything — Until It Does

There’s a concept I keep coming back to: grow just 1% each day. It sounds almost insultingly small. The first two or three months, you’ll barely notice a difference. You might even wonder if any of it is working.

Keep going anyway.

By month six, something shifts. The progress starts to compound in ways that are hard to explain until you’re living it. By month twelve — or give it five years if you’re playing the long game — you’ll look back and barely recognize the person you used to be. Not because you became someone else, but because you finally became more fully yourself.

Why Are You Even Comparing Yourself to Them?

Here’s the thing about the people you’re measuring yourself against: you don’t actually know what’s going on with them.

Some are carrying depression, anxiety, or trauma they’ve never told a soul about. Some are performing — putting on a version of themselves that looks polished or even “godly” from the outside while quietly falling apart behind it. Social media has made us all experts at presenting the highlight reel and hiding the blooper footage.

You are the only person who knows the full truth of your own life — where you’ve been, what you’ve survived, what you’re still working through. That context matters. It’s the only fair comparison you’ll ever have.

The Work, the Love, and the Patience

If you’re willing to put in the work — and I mean the real, unglamorous, day-after-day kind of work — and pair it with a splash of love and shit-tons of patience, something quietly extraordinary happens.

You don’t just improve. You start becoming someone that the people around you benefit from too. The inner work doesn’t stay inside. It shows up in how you show up.

So stop measuring yourself against someone else’s outsides. Measure yourself against your own yesterday.

That’s the only race worth running.

  1. Honestly, this is liberating. We spend so much energy measuring our messy, behind-the-scenes reality against everyone else’s highlight reel, forgetting that comparison is always an apples-to-oranges game. That 1% compound effect is so real, too. Real growth is usually quiet and unglamorous, then suddenly you look up and realize you are standing in a totally new season of life. Thank you for sharing this reminder that the only person worth measuring yourself against is the person we were yesterday!
